Learn more about pharmacognosy this fall by signing up for Pharmacognosy - Fall 2017. Students entering this course must have a strong background in organic chemistry and biology. Students with little to no exposure to biochemistry, organic chemistry, and/or biology may need to take preparatory classes before enrolling in this class. The following is the recommended course outline of study for this program: PHARM 300 - PHARMACOGNOSY (7 credits) Students will be introduced to the history of pharmacology and the field of pharmaceutical development. The course will become more hands-on as students learn about various plant remedies and how they can be used in medicine today. PHARM 301 - PHARMACOLOGY (6 credits) Students will be introduced to the study of how drugs affect the body, metabolism, actions on receptors, and the basics of pharmacokinetics. Students will also begin to learn more about toxicology and how it affects our everyday lives. PHARM 310 – PHYTOPHARMACY (4 cr.) Students will learn about medicines derived from plants. This class will include a variety of topics including but not limited to folk medicine, botanical medicine, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology and traditional Asian medicine. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the pharmacological applications of plants. PHARM 320 – PHARMACOGNOSY (4 cr.) Students will learn about the field of pharmacognosy, which focuses on the study of drugs derived from plants. This course delves into topics such as botanical medicine, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology and traditional Asian medicine. Students will gain a better understanding of why certain plants have a medicinal effect and a greater appreciation for the medicinal potential of nature. PHARM 330 - PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS (4 cr. ) This course is focused on the study of drugs and drug dosage. Students will learn about classification, pharmacology of each drug, action mechanism, recommended dose for each drug, and interactions between drugs. Students will apply what they've learned by writing an analysis report for a hypothetical product. PHARM 440 - CELL BIOLOGY (5 cr.) Students will learn about the way cells work by examining cellular components including DNA, proteins, histones, mitochondria and others. This course aims to help students understand how cells replicate and grow in order to better understand how they function in the body. PHARM 450 - CHEMISTRY OF DRUGS (4 cr.
